The Animal Care Centers of New York City (ACC) reported this week about a severe case of animal abuse they encountered this month.

As many as forty adult dogs were crammed together in a dirty, filthy apartment in New York City. The dogs were rescued, but for many it was the first time in their lives they had been outside.

"These dogs have reportedly lived in total confinement their entire lives", says Tara Mercado from the ACC in a statement. "We found fully grown dogs hidden in cupboards and pushed behind furniture." These were adult dogs, but many puppies were also found in the apartment. This included German Shepherds.

The neglected dogs were taken by the authorities to various shelters and provided with the necessary medical care. However, they cannot immediately be considered for adoption.

Major shock for the animals

Some of the dogs will require long-term care before they can be adopted. Several of the dogs are too frightened or insufficiently socialised. Some animals also have difficulty walking and running because they never really had space to do so. "It is one of the most disturbing animal welfare cases we have encountered", according to the ACC.
