Over the past two weeks, more than 900 earthquakes have been recorded around the Tokara Islands in southern Japan.

These are particularly difficult times for the inhabitants of this remote archipelago: the earthquakes are disrupting their sleep and the constant shaking has left them exhausted and fearful. Although no major damage has been reported, seismic activity remains exceptionally high.

The Japanese authorities have warned that stronger earthquakes may follow and have advised residents to be prepared for evacuation. The Tokara Islands are located in a complex tectonic area where pressure can build up under the seabed and be released suddenly, leading to this series of earthquakes.

Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world and is constantly preparing for major disasters. Experts warn of the possibility of a ‘megaquake’ in the coming decades. This underlines the need to remain vigilant and improve disaster plans.
