A French scientist was detained by immigration authorities while attempting to enter the United States.
The man was scheduled to attend a conference in the country when border police arrested him for criticizing Donald Trump’s decision to suspend financial aid for scientific research.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the police took action after discovering messages on his phone that were critical of the American president.
Upon his arrival in Houston, Texas, on March 9, the space researcher was randomly searched by border officials. Agents reportedly found messages on his phone and laptop criticizing Trump’s policies.
U.S. authorities deemed the messages "conspiratorial and hateful," leading to an FBI investigation. Although the investigation was quickly dropped, the scientist was sent back to France.
