Last weekend, the German frigate Bayern was tracked by a Russian anti-submarine warship.

According to the German newspaper Kieler Nachrichten, the pursuit of the German frigate began in the North Atlantic and continued into the Baltic Sea. The German submarine and other vessels belonging to NATO were conducting exercises when the Vice-Admiral Kulakov appeared. It is worth noting that this Russian ship is equipped with Russia's most advanced technology. It is notably armed with torpedoes, anti-aircraft systems, and missiles.

The Russian destroyers Severomorsk and Vice-Admiral Kulakov were carrying out a submarine manoeuvre in the Kola fjord at the time. Once the exercise was over, the Vice-Admiral Kulakov turned around and headed dangerously towards the frigate Bayern, pursuing it along the Norwegian coast.

All necessary investments

Once the Bayern crew was alerted, the Danish frigate Iver Huitfeldt, stationed in the city of Skagen, approached the Russian ship and followed it to the Great Belt Strait, according to the media outlet L’Indépendant. Faced with this suspicious Russian manoeuvre, the German federal government's maritime coordinator Christoph Ploß expressed his concerns to the newspaper Bild: "The incident shows that we must also protect our ports from growing Russian threats as quickly as possible, particularly by securing infrastructure, investing more in cybersecurity, and modernising bridges for tanks."
