Elon Musk will not have access to the confidential data of American citizens who benefit from social security.
According to a judicial document that was consulted by AFP, a federal judge has just limited the access of the DOGE, Department of Government Efficiency, led by Musk, to personal data such as payslips, bank statements, or even medical records. Moreover, the judge decided that the Social Security (SSA, a federal agency that pays pensions) will only be able to provide DOGE teams with anonymised data.
"Don't touch Social Security"
For the president of the Democracy Forward organization, Skye Perryman, who brought the case to court on behalf of two unions, the decision is a great relief. “It's a great relief for the millions of people who rely on Social Security to protect their most personal and sensitive information,” she said in a statement. “The court's decision sends a clear message to Elon Musk and his DOGE minions: don’t touch Social Security,” also stated Lee Saunders, the president of one of the unions involved (AFSCME), reports 20 Minutes.
According to the Trump administration, the work of the SSA is marred by numerous frauds. Pensions are allegedly being paid to millions of people who have been deceased for many years.
