A new law that just came into effect in Romania allows the country’s military to shoot down any unmanned vehicle that violates its airspace.

The NATO member state is responding to a growing number of drones and debris landing on its territory amid the ongoing war in neighboring Ukraine.

The legislation was signed by Romanian President Ilie Bolojan after being approved by Parliament in February. It comes as Romania continues to face the challenge of clearing drone wreckage and debris that routinely crash on its soil as a result of the conflict across the border.

Romania, which shares a long border with Ukraine, has seen multiple drone incidents in recent months, prompting concerns over national security. Observers suggest that similar measures could be adopted by other Ukrainian border countries.

According to Roger Hilton, a research fellow at the GLOBSEC think tank in Slovakia, the move carries geopolitical risks.

Romania's decision to approve neutralizing drones encroaching its airspace marks a significant but measured escalation by a NATO ally,Hilton told Newsweek back in February.
