A volcano in Alaska may erupt at any moment, and experts are warning that such an event could trigger chaos on a global scale.

Mount Spurr, located roughly 80 miles (130 kilometers) from Alaska’s most populous city, Anchorage, has shown significant seismic activity over the past week, with 66 earthquakes recorded in just seven days.

Scientists believe an eruption could occur in the coming weeks or months. If it does, it could force the closure of several major airports in the region, including Anchorage and Fairbanks, leading to a broader disruption of domestic and international air travel.

The last time Mount Spurr erupted was in 1992, an event that shut down Anchorage International Airport for 20 hours due to volcanic ash.

A recent report from the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) noted that numerous minor earthquakes are occurring beneath the volcano.

Most of the earthquakes occurring under the volcano are too small to be located. Nothing unusual was observed in cloudy to partly cloudy webcam and satellite views,” the AVO added in its update.
