The role of an intimacy coordinator isn't a recent development but gained significant attention after the Weinstein scandal and the #MeToo movement. These experts, present during the filming of scenes considered as sensitive, ensure that actors feel comfortable. While this role may disturb some, it reminds others of the importance of boundaries.

Today, the role in question has become so prominent in the film industry that "the powerful American actors' union SAG requires every sensitive scene to now be filmed in the presence of one of these experts", notes the Belgian magazine Ciné-Télé Revue.

Not everyone is pleased with their presence. Actor Michael Douglas had stated that, in his opinion, intimacy coordinators were "taking control over directors and their vision". Moreover, he felt he didn't need one as he only had to inform his co-star about the actions he was going to take. On the other hand, Toni Collette (known for her role in "Little Miss Sunshine" and "The Sixth Sense") admits to being "even more stressed" by their presence.

With or without underwear

Ellen Pompeo (a lead actress of the series Grey’s Anatomy), on the contrary, finds it essential to have these experts on set, stating that "their intentions are good". However, she does point out that "they're in the way and sometimes create new problems". As for famous Sharon Stone, she regrets not having one on the set of "Basic Instinct" by Paul Verhoeven. The latter betrayed her trust during the iconic scene in which Stone uncrosses her legs in front of the investigators, reports the Belgian media RTBF. Verhoeven had asked the actress to remove her underwear, which was too visible on camera, promising her that nothing would be visible on screen. When Sharon Stone saw the final cut for the first time, she gave him a good slap.
