One would more likely expect this sort of misadventure when travelling to China. Nevertheless, a French scientist was unable to travel to Houston for a conference due to criticisms against Trump found on his phone!
We all know not to make jokes while filling out the US entry form. Customs officers don't appreciate dark, cynical humour. Otherwise, one is directly suspected of conspiracy or terrorism. However, the misadventure of a renowned CNRS researcher shows that the US crossed a new threshold on the 9th of March. The overzealousness of customs officials prevented him from giving a conference in Houston, Texas, for simply voicing his opinion on the situation in the United States with his acquaintances.
No Computer
As part of a random check, customs officers searched the contents of his phone and his computer. They found scathing criticisms against Trump and the US government in online conversations with colleagues and friends. The researcher's "personal opinion" on the US scientific policy was the reason for his deportation and subsequent expulsion. The authorities saw "hatred" against Trump, equating it to terrorism. His equipment was confiscated. The FBI eventually dropped the charges against him, but the damage was done.
Support from his country
France responded through its minister of higher education and research: "Freedom of opinion, free research, and academic freedoms are values that we will continue to proudly uphold. I will defend the possibility for all French researchers to remain loyal to them, in accordance with the law." In the meantime, here's a new travel tip: delete your history, cache, and anti-Trump messages from your social media networks, or buy "blank" equipment before going to the USA.
