Astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore have finally returned to Earth this Tuesday after being stuck on the International Space Station (ISS) for nine months.
The pair landed in Florida late in the afternoon following a mission that was originally meant to last only eight days.
Multiple technical failures on their Starliner spacecraft delayed their return, including a helium leak and thruster malfunctions.
After exiting their capsule, both astronauts will undergo medical evaluations following their grueling 17-hour journey home.
Due to their extended stay in space, Williams and Wilmore won’t be able to walk on their own for days or even weeks as their bodies readjust to Earth's gravity.
NASA ultimately turned to SpaceX, Elon Musk’s company, to ensure the astronauts’ safe return.
