A new road marking has appeared on the A7 and A10 motorways in France. This is a test before possibly becoming widespread. It's a continuous red line. But what is its purpose?

Drivers and tourists travelling on the A7 and A10 in France may encounter a red line on their route. On the A7, it has been drawn over 4km (2.4 miles) in the Vienne region, in Isère south of Lyon, towards Marseille. On the A10, it can be found near Bordeaux. This is an experimental marking. It indicates that the area is particularly dangerous and prone to accidents. Like a white line, it's strictly forbidden to cross it with your vehicle. The fine for crossing it is €135 (150 dollars) (and a deduction of 3 points).

Soon everywhere?

This red line is in the experimental phase. It's meant to further encourage drivers to respect the no-overtaking rule with its suggestive colour. If the conclusions are positive after several months of testing, this marking could extend to the entire French motorway network. Note that the inspiration for this red line comes from Spain where it's already used. And apparently, it's successful!
