Australia has called on China to explain its sudden military buildup, raising concerns as a potential invasion of Taiwan appears increasingly likely.
Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles urged Beijing to show "transparency" regarding its military intentions—a demand echoed by Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.
Marles said: "It's the fact that it is happening without strategic reassurance. It's happening without a clear strategic intent on the part of China… What we want to see is strategic transparency and strategic reassurance provided by China, and an understanding of why such an extraordinary military buildup is necessary."
In recent months, China has stepped up its military presence not only in its territorial waters but also in contested maritime areas.
At the same time, Taiwan, which Beijing seeks to reclaim, has been conducting regular military exercises in preparation for a possible amphibious invasion.
Meanwhile, the Philippines has acquired U.S. military equipment and carried out joint exercises with American forces, reinforcing regional defense cooperation.
