Canada and the United States are drifting further apart after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that Washington is no longer a “reliable partner.”
Carney’s remarks come in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a 25% tariff on all vehicles not manufactured in the United States, set to take effect on April 2.
“The old relationship we had with the United States, based on deep economic integration and close cooperation in security and defense, is over,” Carney said.
The Canadian leader vowed to retaliate against what he called a direct attack.
“We will fight these U.S. tariffs with retaliatory trade measures designed to have maximum impact in the United States while minimizing harm here in Canada,” he added during a press conference.
