Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his government will advance legislation to authorize large-scale, ambitious projects aimed at boosting the national economy in response to new tariffs imposed by Donald Trump.

Carney outlined the framework of the plan following discussions with provincial leaders across the country.

This has been the best meeting we've had in 10 years,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford told reporters.

The Prime Minister said the government intends to launch major “nation-building” initiatives — including the construction of pipelines, nuclear reactors, and commercial trade corridors — with approvals expected within the next two years.

The overarching goal, Carney emphasized, is to make Canada “the strongest economy in the G7” while enhancing the country’s autonomy and long-term resilience.

This meeting demonstrated how we can give ourselves far more than any foreign government can take away,Carney told reporters.

The announcement comes on the heels of a new executive order signed by Trump, increasing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automotive exports.
