China has issued a sharp response to Donald Trump’s announcement of his ambitious “Golden Dome” project, urging the American president to abandon the costly initiative, which Beijing warns could turn outer space into a battlefield and trigger an arms race.

Unveiled earlier this week, Trump’s $175 billion plan aims to build a nationwide missile defense system capable of intercepting attacks from anywhere in the world—even from space—and is expected to be completed before the end of his presidential term.

This highly offensive system violates the principle of the peaceful use of outer space. It will exacerbate the risk of turning outer space into a battlefield and starting an arms race, and shake the international security and arms control system,” said Mao Ning, spokeswoman for China’s Foreign Ministry, on Wednesday morning.

The announcement has drawn comparisons to Ronald Reagan’s 1983 “Star Wars” initiative, which sought to create an anti-missile defense shield against Soviet attacks during the Cold War. That earlier effort was widely criticized at the time for its prohibitive cost and technical impracticality.

Trump, however, framed the « Golden Dome » as a long-overdue fulfillment of Reagan’s vision: “We’ll truly be completing the job President Reagan started 40 years ago—forever ending the missile threat to the homeland.
