China has issued a stern warning to countries considering trade agreements with the United States that could harm Beijing's economic interests, vowing there will be consequences.
The threat comes amid reports that Washington is exploring deals in which it would reduce tariffs in exchange for a cutback in trade with China.
The Trump administration began negotiations with a Japanese delegation last week, and talks with South Korea are expected to begin this week.
Since returning to the White House, President Donald Trump has reignited a trade war with Beijing, significantly raising tariffs on Chinese goods. However, he has not ruled out potential negotiations with China to strike a new deal.
"Appeasement cannot bring peace, and compromise cannot earn one respect," said a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce.
"China firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China's interests. If this happens, China will never accept it and will resolutely take countermeasures," the spokesperson added.
