China has pledged to "fight to the end" if Donald Trump continues the trade war he initiated through the imposition of tariffs on numerous countries.

Since the announcement of the new tariffs, the Trump administration has sent international financial markets into turmoil, while affected countries work to formulate proportionate responses.

Beijing has already imposed retaliatory tariffs of 34% and has promised to fight to protect its economy.

"If the U.S. disregards the interests of the two countries and the international community and insists on fighting a tariff war and a trade war, China will be with it to the end," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Tuesday.

"I would like to stress once again that there are no winners in trade wars and tariff wars, and there is no way out for protectionism… China will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate and lawful rights and interests," he added.

The escalating trade war is expected to force several major U.S. companies — including Apple — to rethink their supply chains and move production to countries like India.
