China has reportedly begun constructing a spectacular centre in the ocean depths, a fully equipped and ready-to-use station.

China expects this station to be operational by 2030 and located in the South China Sea, once construction has been approved by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

One of the greatest challenges of this build will be maintaining the enormous structure at such a depth, as well as installing a complex network of fibre optics to collect real-time information and data. Surface vessels and autonomous submarines will be used in this operation.

China is not only searching for information and data, but also for treasures such as the 70 billion tonnes of methane hydrates in the South China Sea. This could lead the country to enhance its energy capabilities and reserves, which, along with reserves of cobalt and nickel, would enable China to take a new step in its energy leadership.
