Coca-Cola to change one of the ingredients in its secret recipe, following the intervention of the US President.

Coca-Cola in the United States is at the centre of a political controversy after Donald Trump claimed to have convinced the brand to change the recipe for its flagship drink. According to official statements made by Trump on Truth Social on 16 July 2025 and subsequently broadcast by several media outlets, the US president asked Coca-Cola to replace high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), used as the main sweetener in the United States, with ‘real cane sugar’.

Trump, presenting himself as a defender of Americans' health under his ‘Make America Healthy Again’ plan, publicly thanked Coca-Cola for agreeing to the request, calling the change the ‘best’ option. The announcement has economic and political implications, particularly for US corn growers, who could be hurt by the decision.

However, Coca-Cola has not officially confirmed the change in recipe. The company limited itself to a courtesy statement, appreciating "President Trump's enthusiasm" and promising to "share more details about innovative new offerings very soon."
