Denmark’s postal service will stop delivering letters by the end of the year, citing the rapid shift to digital communication.

Earlier this year, PostNord announced that letter volumes had collapsed and that the centuries-old service, running for over 400 years, would be discontinued. The move will also result in the loss of around a third of its workforce.

Danes hardly receive any letters anymore. It's been going down for years and years. They’re receiving one letter a month on average, it’s not a lot,” said Kim Pedersen, head of PostNord Denmark.

On the contrary, Danes love to shop online. Global e-commerce is growing significantly, and we are moving with it,” he added.

Fifteen years ago, PostNord operated several letter-sorting centers across the country. Today, only one remains, located in the western suburbs of Copenhagen.

Since 2000, the number of letters handled by the company has plummeted by 90%, from around 1.4 billion to just 110 million last year.

In the meantime, PostNord has begun removing many of Copenhagen’s public mailboxes, even though some residents still use them regularly.
