Denmark to create a compulsory conscription system for former military personnel in the event of war.

Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen has announced the creation of a new compulsory conscription system which will allow a large number of former military personnel to be incorporated into the army reserve to respond to possible crises or conflicts.

"We are developing a detailed plan to create a new mobilisation force made up of thousands of former military personnel ready to return to service," the minister explained in a message broadcast on social media, justifying the measure due to rising tensions in Europe following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Poulsen emphasised that "Europe is in conflict" and that "the world is changing rapidly", making it necessary to "urgently strengthen Denmark’s defences."

In addition, the government has announced the extension of compulsory military service to eleven months, a measure that will come into force in February 2026. New air defence systems are also set to be introduced and will be available from next year.
