Donald Trump announced on Friday that thousands of federal employees will be reclassified in order to make it easier to fire them.

The U.S. president, who has made no secret of his desire to slash bureaucracy and reduce staffing across federal institutions, posted on Truth Social that a new civil service rule will soon be issued by the federal Office of Personnel Management.

Trump is specifically targeting federal employees involved in political matters. By reclassifying their positions, they would lose the job protections typically afforded to civil servants.

If these employees refuse to advance the president’s political agenda or engage in corrupt behavior, they should no longer have jobs,” Trump wrote on the social media platform.

According to several local media outlets, the executive order could allow Trump to dismiss up to 50,000 federal workers—roughly 2% of the total federal workforce. Reuters added that 260,000 federal employees have already been fired since the billionaire returned to the White House.
