Donald Trump averaged a 45% approval rating during the first quarter of his second term, according to a Gallup poll—marking the second-lowest score for any U.S. president at this stage in office since World War II.

During the same period in his first term, Trump held an even lower rating of 41%.

The most popular president during their first quarter in office remains John F. Kennedy, who enjoyed a 74% approval rating in 1961, followed by Dwight Eisenhower with 71% in 1953.

Since returning to office, Trump has signed a flurry of executive orders that have significantly disrupted the political landscape. Among the most notable moves was the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, as well as the launch of a global trade war through sweeping new tariffs.

Thomas Gift, associate professor of political science and director of the Centre on U.S. Politics at University College London, told Newsweek: "There's a widespread assumption—especially among progressive elites in major cities—that tariffs are politically damaging for Trump. But that may reflect more of an echo chamber than the national mood. A considerable number of Americans are four-square behind Trump's tariffs. That not only includes MAGA Republicans, but also populists on the left who are cheering on Trump's attacks on free trade."
