Donald Trump claimed this week that the war in Ukraine could have been avoided if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had been "competent."
The U.S. President also blamed his predecessor Joe Biden, as well as Vladimir Putin, although he emphasized that if he had been in office in February 2022, the conflict would never have started.
“If Biden were competent, and if Zelensky were competent—and I don’t know that he is—that war should never have been allowed to happen,” Trump told reporters. “I went four years and Putin wouldn’t even bring it up. But as soon as the election was rigged and I wasn’t here, that war started.”
Trump went on to say that responsibility was shared and that the war could have been stopped much earlier.
His comments come shortly after U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Vladimir Putin in Russia last week, stating that the Russian president was open to a “lasting peace” in Ukraine.
Following several promising meetings in Saudi Arabia, however, there have been no further exchanges between American and Russian delegations.
