Donald Trump has claimed that Canada is considering joining the United States as its “cherished 51st state” in return for access to the U.S.'s upcoming Golden Dome defense system.

The American president made the claim shortly after King Charles III addressed the Canadian Parliament, during which the monarch acknowledged the country was facing “unprecedented challenges” but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Canada's sovereignty.

“I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 billion dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation — but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, providing no evidence for the claim.

Since taking office as Prime Minister, Mark Carney has repeatedly said that Canada will never become part of the United States.

Last week, Trump unveiled the Golden Dome project, a defense system said to be capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, and even those launched from space. The billionaire promised that the system would be completed by the end of his term in 2029.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has frequently urged closer integration with Canada, including the idea of statehood, which he argues would simplify trade relations between the two nations.
