Donald Trump has claimed that China has already breached the trade agreement reached between the two nations, which was intended to bring an end to the tariff war initiated by the American president.
After slapping steep tariffs on Chinese goods, delegations from both countries met in Switzerland to hammer out a deal—one that Trump now says Beijing has quickly broken.
"I made a FAST DEAL with China in order to save them from what I thought was going to be a very bad situation. Everybody was happy! That is the good news!!! The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US," Trump wrote on Truth Social Friday morning.
The accusation comes shortly after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent admitted that negotiations with Beijing had stalled somewhat, although further talks are expected in the coming weeks.
A ceasefire in the trade conflict had been declared on May 12, with the Trump administration lowering tariffs to 30%, and China cutting tariffs on U.S. goods to 10%.
