Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 50% tariff on all goods imported from the European Union, starting June 1, 2025.
After previously introducing tariffs on multiple countries, the U.S. has reached trade agreements with some, including the United Kingdom. However, Trump expressed frustration that negotiations with the EU remain stalled.
“The European Union, which was formed with the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE, has been very difficult to deal with,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Our discussions with them are going nowhere! Therefore, I am recommending a straight 50 percent tariff on the European Union, starting on June 1, 2025.”
Following the announcement, European markets closed lower, with some EU diplomats criticizing the lack of clear objectives from the American side as a key obstacle to progress in trade talks.
