Donald Trump has warned Iran that things could take a turn for the worse if the Gulf nation refuses to negotiate a nuclear deal.
His remarks follow Tehran’s announcement that it had responded to Washington’s letter regarding potential negotiations.
“My preference (…) is to reach an understanding with Iran. But if we can’t come to an agreement, very bad things are going to happen,” the U.S. president said from the White House.
Tensions between the two nations are at an all-time high, with Trump insisting that a deal must be reached one way or another.
During his first term, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the agreement—also signed by other world powers—that restricted Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.
Western nations continue to accuse Tehran of secretly working toward acquiring nuclear weapons.
