Trump urges migrants to ‘self-deport’

Donald Trump wants to encourage undocumented migrants currently in the United States to “self-deport,” according to a White House official.

The new initiative, dubbed "Project Homecoming", aims to persuade migrants to voluntarily leave the U.S. with support from the federal government, including financial incentives.

Under the program, the Trump administration is urging undocumented individuals to depart the country on their own terms or face heavy fines or the loss of their legal status. In a controversial move, President Trump has also ordered the reopening of the infamous Alcatraz prison in San Francisco.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, migrants who choose to leave voluntarily will receive $1,000 and travel assistance.

Several advocacy groups have condemned the plan, advising migrants to seek legal counsel to fully understand their rights.

As of now, many migrants are reportedly being transferred to a high-security prison in El Salvador, under the terms of a bilateral agreement between the two nations.
