Did you just buy them and they're already going mushy? With this incredibly effective tip, there's no need to get frustrated over wilted bananas anymore.

To extend the lifespan of your bananas, pay close attention to where you place them and what surrounds them.

Bananas are particularly sensitive to ethylene, a gas naturally emitted by many fruits, including pears, apples, and melons just after they are harvested, according to Linternaute. Consequently, when surrounded by other fruits, bananas ripen much faster and take on that mushy appearance and unappealing black colour. To keep them away from their fruit friends, you can easily hang them up high, in a basket or another suitable holder. This way, air circulates better between and around the fruits, allowing them to be preserved longer.

Cling film or foil, and you're sorted!

Another little-known tip involves wrapping the tops of your bananas' stems with aluminium foil or cling film (your choice). Indeed, it's at this extremity that these fruits concentrate most of the ethylene emissions. When isolated in this way, the gas can no longer spread over the bananas themselves and therefore prevents them from ripening prematurely, reports Linternaute. If you adopt this method, be sure to wrap it tightly and ensure no holes form in the wrapping.
