German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has said that Vladimir Putin should be judged by his actions, not his rhetoric, as the Russian leader continues to “buy time.”

Despite a two-hour call between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump—praised by Trump himself—no date or timeline has been set for potential peace negotiations.

Speaking at a meeting of European defense ministers in Brussels, Pistorius accused the Kremlin of stalling and failing to take any real steps toward ending a war that has now dragged on for more than three years.

Vladimir Putin is evidently continuing to play for time—that is also very clear to see. And so, even though Russia is willing to talk about a memorandum, there is still no ceasefire in sight,” he said.

He continued: “I hear the words, I hear the statements, but in the end, I stick to my approach of saying—I no longer judge words, only deeds and actions. I believe that helps all of us more than speculating about the seriousness of intentions.

Pistorius stressed that Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine demonstrate Putin’s true long-term intentions, regardless of his diplomatic overtures.
