A former nurse from Würselen, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is on trial in Aachen for nine counts of murder and 34 counts of attempted murder. The German broadcaster WDR describes it as "one of the largest serial murders in German history".
According to the indictment, the 44-year-old man allegedly injected patients in the palliative care unit of the Rhein-Maas-Klinikum in Würselen with strong sedatives between December 2023 and May 2024, supposedly to ensure a quiet night shift. In some cases, this led to the patients' deaths.
The investigation began after a complaint from the hospital. How the hospital detected the nurse's crimes was not disclosed by the Public Prosecutor's Office. The police examined hundreds of patient records, uncovering several suspicious deaths.
