Two young German women were looking forward to a beautiful five-week trip to Hawaii, California, and Costa Rica. But it didn’t go as planned because immediately upon their arrival at their dream destination Hawaii, they were detained by border control and taken to a deportation centre.

Charlotte (19) and Maria (18) had an ESTA travel authorisation for the USA and therefore did not expect any problems. At customs, their documents were thoroughly checked for a long time. Eventually, the German girls were handcuffed and taken to a deportation centre, as if they were criminals. They were accused of possibly intending to work illegally in the USA.

They share their story on X and Reddit. "Shocking and surreal", is how they describe their experiences. After being fully searched, undergoing a full body scan, and given green prison uniforms, the cell door slammed shut behind them. "We slept on mouldy mattresses, the toilets were basic, and the guards even warned us not to eat any food that was past its expiration date. For a moment, we even thought it was a hidden camera show. We had done nothing wrong, we were just tourists wanting to travel to the USA."

"Our phones and all our belongings were temporarily taken from us. Simply because we hadn’t yet arranged accommodation in Hawaii. But we planned to do that on site. Unfortunately, for the overzealous border officers, that was reason enough to detain us like criminals and send us back," they say.

The next morning, the German travellers were taken back to Honolulu airport and deported to Japan. Without receiving much further explanation.

And Charlotte and Maria are not an isolated case. The Trump administration is clearly adopting a stricter approach to illegal migrants, resulting in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers enforcing a ‘tighter grip’ on border control, even for European tourists.
