Germany has criticized the U.S. peace proposal, calling it a form of "capitulation."
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius argued on Sunday that Washington needs to present a new offer, as the current proposal heavily favors Russia.
The deal presented to Vladimir Putin reportedly states that territory seized by Russian forces in Ukraine would be ceded to Moscow, and Crimea would be officially recognized as part of Russia.
“Ukraine on its own could have gotten what’s included in that (Trump proposal) a year ago already, practically through capitulation. I don't see any added value,” Pistorius told ARD.
Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy firmly reiterated that Crimea belongs to Ukraine and that he could not sign any agreement that suggests otherwise.
Peace negotiations remain deadlocked, with Washington warning it could withdraw from its role as mediator if no progress is made this week.
