Germany’s incoming Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has signaled his willingness to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles capable of striking targets deep inside Russian territory.
Merz emphasized that Ukraine must take the initiative rather than remain on the defensive, as diplomatic talks between Russia and the United States continue in pursuit of a ceasefire in Ukraine.
The idea of sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine had long been rejected by outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who argued that doing so would only escalate the conflict. The Taurus missiles, which have a range of approximately 480 kilometers, could be used to strike strategic targets in Crimea—a region under Russian control since 2014.
“If things continue as they are—if, for example, the most important land connection between Russia and Crimea is destroyed, or if something happens in Crimea itself, where most of the Russian military logistics are based—then that could finally be the moment to bring this country [Ukraine] strategically back into focus,” Merz told a German broadcaster.
Ukraine already deploys long-range missiles provided by the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. Both Washington and London have given Kyiv the green light to use those weapons to strike targets on Russian soil.
