Germany’s new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has pledged to build the strongest conventional army in Europe by providing the Defense Ministry with the necessary funding to achieve that goal.

As European nations continue to increase their defense budgets in response to the threat of Russian aggression, Berlin aims to take this trend even further to deter any future attacks.

Strength deters aggression. Weakness, on the other hand, invites aggression,” Merz said in his first address to the Bundestag, according to Die Zeit.

Currently, German forces are stationed in Lithuania near the Russian border. Across Europe, Germany ranks third in military strength, behind Italy in second place and France in the lead.

With the United States threatening to scale back its financial contributions to NATO, Berlin’s announcement is likely to be welcomed by the Trump administration.

Merz also emphasized that Germany’s support for Ukraine would remain “strong,” but made clear that no German troops would be deployed on Ukrainian soil.
