A woman from China began to feel severe itching in her eyes. As she scratched, a live worm fell out.
It was a horrifying sight for this Chinese woman who, in panic, immediately rushed to the emergency department. For the doctors, the discovery was surprising as no fewer than 60 live worms located between her eyelids and eyeballs had to be removed.
According to specialists, the woman contracted a species of roundworm, Filarioidea. These parasites can be transmitted by infected dogs or cats. The woman, after having been in contact with these animals, likely picked up larvae on her hands before touching her eyes.
Such infections are usually more common in Africa, notes the media outlet The Sun.
