We've all heard about morning runs, trail running, endurance training... But have you ever heard of walking or running backwards?

Well, in Japan, they have been following this trend for a while. In the UK, there are even championships organised for backward runners.

What's so special about walking backwards?

Advantages

Walking (or walking) backwards is said to be good for the body, sleep, and memory. It also sharpens your senses as this form of walking requires extra focus. Since you don't have eyes in the back of your head, you rely on other senses to navigate. So, your brain gets an extra workout!

It improves your posture; walking backwards is done with a straight back, which is also a good workout for your core muscles.

In a backward running motion, your calves and the fronts of your thighs (quadriceps) work harder. This is while regular running relies on your hamstrings and knees. Thus, walking backwards decreases the risk of injuries.

It can also be a fun change from your weekly or daily (training) routine.

Also important: walking backwards requires more energy, which means you burn more calories!
