Faced with the depopulation of certain villages, an Italian province has taken major steps to encourage people to settle in the area and give it a boost.

A solution that comes at a cost. Indeed, to attract new residents, the province of Trente has decided to grant financial assistance to those wishing to settle in one of its municipalities, reports Le Parisien.

In this region known as Dolomites, in northern Italy, many homes have been abandoned. For the purchase as well as the renovation of these houses, 100,000 euros in aid will be granted, more precisely: 80,000 euros for refurbishment work and 20,000 euros for the purchase.

Under what conditions?

The plan includes several conditions, one of which is to live in the property for ten years. People interested in the financial boost will also have the option to rent it out, reports Demotivateur. And for all those who don't comply with the contract clauses, they will have to repay the 100,000 euros in aid. Moreover, beneficiaries can acquire up to 3 properties. Finally, all residents of the region who are under 45 years old cannot be part of the programme, which is reserved for people living abroad or Italians living outside of Trente.

“The aim is to revitalise local communities and promote territorial cohesion,” emphasised the president of Trente, Maurizio Fugatti, during the presentation of the project.

A 2024 budgetary law

Thirty-three municipalities in the Italian province of Trente have been selected to participate in the programme, these having more empty homes than occupied ones. As reported by Demotivateur, this assistance plan is part of a budgetary law dating from 2024, which established a fund of 30 million euros to economically and socially support villages with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants that are in difficulty.
