Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Wednesday denounced U.S. demands to halt the country’s uranium enrichment program, calling them nonsense and vowing that Washington will not succeed in stopping Iran’s nuclear progress.
For weeks, negotiations between the United States and Iran over a renewed nuclear agreement have stalled. Washington insists Tehran must completely halt its uranium enrichment activities, fearing that the program could be used to develop nuclear weapons.
Tehran, however, maintains that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful, meant for civilian purposes only, and that nuclear weapons are not part of its plans.
“The U.S.'s first word is that Iran should not have a nuclear industry. Our response to America’s nonsense claims is clear: they cannot do a damn thing about this,” Khamenei said, according to Mehr News Agency.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened the use of military force if a new deal is not reached.
In a statement posted to X, Khamenei claimed that the U.S. wants to shut down Iran’s nuclear development in order to maintain its geopolitical dominance and keep Iran dependent.
“Thousands of nuclear scientists and researchers have been trained in Iran. Should we disappoint them, make them unemployed, and take away their hope in our country’s future? The rude, insolent U.S. leaders want this. They’re opposed to progress and self-sufficiency for the Iranian people. In the current nuclear talks, which are being mediated by Oman, the U.S. proposal is entirely against the spirit of ‘We can.’ What the U.S. is demanding is that we have no nuclear industry at all and remain dependent on them,” he wrote.
