On Tuesday, May 13, French President Emmanuel Macron mentioned a possible deployment of planes equipped with nuclear weapons.
These statements come as Europe fears a major military disengagement by the United States.
The Kremlin was quick to respond to these French threats, without allowing itself to be disturbed. “This will not bring security, predictability, or stability,” said Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov in his daily press briefing. He added: “Significant efforts still need to be made by Russia, the United States, and European countries with nuclear weapons in order to form a strategic security architecture in Europe,” stating that “the entire system of strategic security and stability” is currently in “a deplorable state”.
As early as March, Emmanuel Macron had expressed his desire to “open the strategic debate” on Europe's protection under the French nuclear umbrella, reports the media outlet 20 Minutes.
The remarks in question don't seem to particularly affect Moscow.
