According to several White House sources, as reported by Politico, the President reportedly told those close to him that Elon Musk was going to leave his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and that his departure was imminent.

Trump and the CEO of Tesla reportedly agreed on a departure date: Musk would leave the White House once his temporary status as a "special government employee" expires. This measure allows an external personality, who isn't a public servant, to briefly hold public office while being exempt from certain rules, particularly regarding conflicts of interest, reports the media 20 Minutes. This status, which can only be held for 130 days per year, allowed the world's richest man to work within the administration without detaching from his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX.

And even though the President of the United States is said to be very satisfied with Musk's work at the head of the DOGE, tensions have reportedly risen behind the scenes. The South African entrepreneur has been labelled "unmanageable" by some members of Donald Trump's cabinet, who condemned his unpredictability as well as his controversial posts on X (formerly Twitter), indicates 20 Minutes.

Bye Bye Musk?

In an interview on Fox News, the Tesla CEO praised the work accomplished since the Republican's return to power. “I think we will have achieved the goal of reducing the deficit by a trillion dollars." A statement that sounds like a farewell… On the other hand, Donald Trump announced to the press Monday night that “at some point, Elon will want to return to his businesses”. He added that he would remain at the head of the DOGE “as long as possible”.
