Italy’s Ministry of the Interior has ordered police forces across the country to increase security around Tesla dealerships following a recent arson attack.
The Digos unit, Italy’s counterterrorism police, has been tasked with investigating whether the fire that destroyed 17 Tesla vehicles in Torre Angela, a suburb of Rome, was carried out by an anarchist group.
Firefighters spent several hours battling the flames on Monday. There are currently 13 Tesla dealerships in Italy, and they will now be closely monitored, according to a government directive issued by the Ministry of Defense.
Since being appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk has been working to cut jobs within U.S. federal institutions. The billionaire, a close ally of Donald Trump, has also faced backlash from Tesla’s top investors, who believe he is not dedicating enough attention to the company.
While acts of vandalism targeting Tesla first began in the United States, the trend has now spread to Europe, where protests and attacks on Tesla locations have increased in recent weeks.
