During a press briefing, a White House spokesperson responded to comments from a French MEP who wants the United States to return the Statue of Liberty.
The French socialist MEP Raphaël Glucksmann stated that the United States would do better to return the Statue of Liberty to France. According to him, since Donald Trump returned to power, Washington no longer represents the values depicted by the statue.
Karoline Leavitt, a White House spokesperson, was questioned on the matter during a press briefing. Will the American president return this iconic work? "Absolutely not," she declared. "My advice to this low-level, anonymous French politician is to remember that it's thanks to the United States that the French don't speak German today. They should be extremely grateful to our magnificent country."
France gifted the Statue of Liberty, inaugurated in 1886, to the United States in honour of the centenary of the American Declaration of Independence and as a sign of friendship between the two countries.
