The Trump administration announced on Monday the freezing of $2.2 billion (approximately €1.9 billion) in multi-year grants and $60 million in multi-year contracts (approximately €53 million) for Harvard University.

The reason given was that, a few hours earlier, the prestigious American university had indicated that it rejected the policy changes demanded by the White House.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration believes that the disruption to learning that has hit campuses in recent years is "unacceptable" and that "the harassment of Jewish students is intolerable".

"It's time for elite universities to take the issue seriously and commit to making meaningful changes if they wish to continue benefiting from taxpayer support."

Previously, the president of Harvard, Alan M. Garber, had stated "that no government, regardless of the party in power, should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and what areas of study and research they can pursue".
