Leaking reservoir drains: water level has dropped by 21 metres

A leak under the dam wall has already caused 20 million cubic metres of water to escape from the Lago di Zoccolo in Italy's South Tyrol province.

As a result, approximately two thirds of the Lago di Zoccolo's total volume has already been lost, and the water level has dropped by more than 21 metres.

Measures are being taken to protect fish stocks. For instance, three ponds are being created at one end of the lake to provide a refuge for the fish while repair work is carried out and the lake is replenished. The lake will be drained in a controlled manner to enable repairs to the leak, according to operator Alperia.
