Lithuania plans to spend 1.1 billion euros over the next ten years, with 800 million euros allocated for the purchase of anti-tank mines, to fortify its borders against a possible invasion from Russia and Belarus, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence announced on Monday.

The ministry justified the need for this investment in a statement to enhance its "counter-mobility" capabilities, a military term referring to the structures and weapons that prevent or hinder the movement of enemy troops and military vehicles across a border or strategic area to be defended.

In addition to the mines and devices for storing and deploying them, "the counter-mobility equipment arsenal includes electronic warfare capabilities, anti-drone systems, and surveillance and early warning systems," the ministry noted.

The Lithuanian border defence plan, which is part of a broader line of defence agreed upon by the three Baltic states, will also include 27 "engineering equipment parks" that will be established near Lithuania's borders with Russia and Belarus.
