It has been thirty years since father and son last spoke. The star of “Home Alone” talked about this conflicted relationship on the podcast Sibling Revelry.
Here's what Macaulay Culkin says about his father: “He's a man who had seven children, now has four grandchildren, and none of them want anything to do with him.” This is a situation the actor cannot imagine experiencing with his own family, his wife Brenda Song and their two children, Dakota and Carson. If this were to happen, unlike his father, who is too "narcissistic," he wouldn't hesitate to ask himself if he did “something wrong”.
When Macaulay Culkin was about twelve years old and told his father he needed a break from Hollywood, his father might as well have blocked his ears. “I felt trapped,” the star confides. At age 14, during his parents' separation, Culkin finally found freedom. “Great, I'm done,” he apparently told his parents. “I hope you enjoyed yourselves and made as much money as you could because, for me, it's over.”
Just one lesson to learn
Once the legal battle between his parents started, the actor already knew he wanted “nothing to do with (his) father”, as reported by La Dépêche. Recalling visits enforced by lawyers, Macaulay Culkin mentioned being a victim of physical and mental abuse. And what about his six siblings? Except for a few contacts that "turned sour," they aren't much more in touch with their father either.
“Now that I have my own children, I look back and think, 'I can't believe he was like that. He had all these lovely kids',” Culkin continues, concluding with highlighting the only lesson learned from his father: “One of my earliest memories of him is when I told myself I wouldn't be like that with my kids when I grow up.”
