Did you know that aluminium foil has two sides, one matt and one shiny? If not, you now have a new topic of conversation in your pocket.

Created to preserve food and used for over 100 years, aluminium foil is actually made up of two layers of aluminium that are stacked before being rolled between rollers, according to the media Demotivateur. And it's the side that has been in direct contact with the rolling rollers that has a shiny look.

A double use

Each side of the aluminium foil therefore has its own utility. The shiny side, thanks to its surface which reflects light, repels some of the heat from food. The matt side, conversely, retains heat, and absorbs it more easily. Therefore, when you need to keep your culinary preparations cool, you should place the shiny side outwards, so that the foil doesn't absorb the heat. And if you're cooking food, a potato or fish, in the oven, it would be better to expose the matt side to the heat, indicates Demotivateur. Finally, if you decide to place your food on the aluminium foil in the oven, be aware that both sides can conduct heat.
