On July 8, the American company Mattel announced the release of the first Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes.

According to the toy manufacturer, the launch of this new Barbie is intended to "strengthen the sense of inclusion and empathy" around this condition, which affects millions of children around the world.

"Making play more inclusive"

Barbie brand senior vice president Krista Berger, quoted by the El Segundo, California-based company, said: "At Mattel, we recognize the powerful role Barbie plays in shaping children's early perceptions of the world." She added: "By expanding our line and including dolls with medical conditions like type 1 diabetes, we can represent the diabetes community and continue our mission to make play more inclusive, so every child can see themselves in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love."

Lila Moss gets her own Barbie

To mark this launch, Kate Moss's daughter, a model like her mother, received a Barbie doll in her image. Lila Moss has suffered from type 1 diabetes since childhood. “Now being able to see Barbie dolls with type 1 diabetes, and receiving a Barbie doll that looks like me, with her patches visible, is both surreal and special,” she said.
